Went to a friend-of-a-friend's apartment last night to see the opening ceremonies. Pretty impressive. The best part was that the apartment overlooked both the Bird's Nest and the Olympic Village. Watching involved seeing it on TV, then scrambling out to the balcony, camera in hand, every time fireworks went off. I've been a bit leery of the Olympics being in town (or being in town for the Olympics), but this was great.
First fireworks set was quite nice.
After that, they did something I hadn't seen before - they shot off fireworks to make smiley faces all around the stadium. Can see some of these in this unfortunately blurry pic.
The littlest Olympic fan was confused as to which country to support.
Most impressively, we could actually see the torch being lit from the balcony.
And, from the other side of the apartment, we could see an equally impressive display over the Olympic Village.
